Why you shouldn’t write off AirAsia India CEO Mittu Chandilya just yet

By Cuckoo Paul

LCCs around the world have over the years built their airlines, with loud support from gregarious, in-your-face CEOs, famous for taking on the system.

Mittu Chandilya

Mittu Chandilya is AirAsia India's quiet, new CEO. His appointment has been met with huge amounts of skepticism in the Indian media and airline industry for this, and the fact that he has no earlier airline experience. As the airline revs up for take-off, Mittu is slowly building up his profile. As a first step this week, he was on a whirlwind, four city tours with his charismatic boss Tony Fernandes.

Mittu's big challenge will be to get out of Fernandes' shadow and establish his persona in a market where few businessmen dare take on the system publicly. How he charts this course remains to be seen.

Watch the video above to know why writing him off so soon is equivalent to stereotyping a woman as a bimbo.

Forbes India's Cuckoo Paul caught up with Mittu and Tony in Mumbai, for a detailed chat on their plans. Read their story in the magazine's next issue which hits the stands on July 8
