Mittu Chandilya is AirAsia India's quiet, new CEO. His appointment has been met with huge amounts of skepticism in the Indian media and airline industry for this, and the fact that he has no earlier airline experience. As the airline revs up for take-off, Mittu is slowly building up his profile. As a first step this week, he was on a whirlwind, four city tours with his charismatic boss Tony Fernandes.
Mittu's big challenge will be to get out of Fernandes' shadow and establish his persona in a market where few businessmen dare take on the system publicly. How he charts this course remains to be seen.
